Global hairdresser Trevor Sorbie in NE

An entrepreneur who went from barbershop boy to Buckingham Palace is to share the story of his world-renowned success with North East business figures.

Trevor Sorbie, the businessman credited with revolutionising hairdressing and putting England at the cutting edge of the industry, will address the Entrepreneurs’ Forum on Tuesday, March 23.

He will reveal the journey that took him from working as an apprentice in his father’s two-chair Essex salon after leaving school at 15 and on to forging a global brand synonymous with excellence.

Mr Sorbie opened his own barbers in North London in 1969 before becoming a stylist at Vidal Sassoon and being named the firm’s artistic director in 1973.
His major breakthrough came in 1985 as he launched his first Covent Garden salon, developing a first-class reputation and skills that led to him securing the British Hairdresser of the Year title an unrivalled four times.

His professional hair care product range hit the high street the following year, eventually going global and diversifying into a male grooming and long hair empire.

A flurry of prestigious accolades followed, including the World Hairdresser of the Year honour in 2001, Most Wanted International Hairdresser in 2003 and Most Wanted Influential Hairdresser in 2004.

Mr Sorbie’s achievements gained royal recognition when he was awarded an MBE in 2004 - the same year he opened his second salon in Brighton.

Carole Beverley, chief executive of the Entrepreneurs’ Forum, said: “This is an unmissable opportunity to hear first-hand the story of an iconic business figure. Trevor Sorbie’s innovative thinking and business brain have brought him phenomenal worldwide success in a fiercely competitive industry.

“His words of wisdom will draw on many different aspects of business, from retail to staffing to expanding into global markets, and his success is bound to prove inspirational.”

The event takes place at Brewin Dolphin, Time Central, in Newcastle, from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Attendance is free for Forum members and £15 plus VAT for their guests. The cost for non-members is £35 plus VAT.
