SURGO Appointed To Construct The Beacon

Leading contractor SURGO Construction, has been appointed to build an exciting new £6.5million community project in Newcastle’s West End.

Charitable community organisation Centre West, in a joint venture with Ground Work (South Tyneside and Newcastle), has appointed SURGO to construct an innovative, environmentally friendly multi-cultural centre on the site of an old fire station. The Beacon will occupy the site, next to St John Ambulance regional HQ, on West Road.

Designed by local architect Ainsworth Sparks, at three storeys  high with a floorplate of 35,000sq ft, the new building will be substantial and, as its name suggests,  a beacon of rejuvenation and enterprise for the local community living in and around the West End .

Playing to its strong community focus, The Beacon will have a key role supporting an ethos of enterprise in the area by providing facilities such as a hot desk zone,  easy in, easy out office accommodation, while the main enterprise support agencies will deliver services within the centre,  providing advice to budding entrepreneurs and existing small to medium businesses.
The inclusion of a unique Artisan Mall within a glass atrium will provide additional opportunities creating studio and workshop space for artisans and crafts people from the local community to take up residency.  In addition the centre will also have a bistro and a much needed conference and banqueting space will occupy 400sqmt of the second floor.

Speaking about this latest contract win, director Jeff Alexander said:

“We are pleased to be working on such an innovative and much needed project as The Beacon.  Our role is two- fold comprising of enabling works, including demolition of the original fire station which we have already commenced, followed by construction of the complex multi-cultural building.

“The project’s main road location will present some challenges however, thanks to detailed programme planning, this will not impact on the build schedule.”

On this occasion SURGO will be working with project partners including client’s agent, Mouchel, quantity surveyor, Gleeds, mechanical and electrical engineer, WSP, structural engineer Fairhurst and CDM co-ordinator, Turner Townsend.
