Haines Watts celebrate 25 Years in the North East!

Haines Watts Chartered Accountants North East offices are celebrating reaching the grand age of 25. Haines Watts which has offices in Newcastle and Darlington are delighted to be reaching two birthday milestones this year. The Newcastle office has now been in business for 25 years and the Darlington office for 21 years. You can help Haines Watts celebrate through their celebratory competition.

In 1998 the two offices merged and became one business, which has seen them collectively working with businesses from the Scottish borders right down to Yorkshire.
The company which is over 30 employees strong has seen some huge changes over the past 25 years. Not only financial and political milestones but even Managing Partner, Chris Scott hairstyles!

As Managing Partner at Haines Watts’ North East offices, Chris has over 30 years accountancy experience. He has assisted numerous business owners with their corporate finance transactions and has even helped several clients achieve their dreams by helping them with the successful sale of their business.
With a client turnover topping £500 million, the company is justifiably proud of its achievements. Haines Watts has seen many changes over the past 25 years, back in the 80’s when Haines Watts opened its doors not only did shoulder pads dominate the fashion scene and the mass produced pop of Stock, Aitken and Waterman flooded the charts but also Margaret Thatcher was in power and Britain suffered a severe recession which saw many businesses fail.

In the early 90s the economy experienced a further property crash and subsequent inflationary boom. The economic cycle has come full circle more recently with the financial meltdown making many more businesses victims to insolvency.

25 years ago, can you remember when;

Husbands used to be taxed on wife’s income
Basic rate of income tax was 30%, higher rate (over £40,000) was 60%
Interest rates were 13.5%
Inflation was 9.5%
Average house price was £40,000
Average earnings were £8,900
Petrol was 42.8p/litre!
Beer was £1.40 a pint
