Deloitte staff raise £1 million for charity
Staff and partners at Deloitte, the business advisory firm, have battled through all weathers this summer on their way to raising an outstanding £1million for charity.
This contribution to the firm’s chosen charity partners has been raised through all manner of events and activities including a triathlon, a dragon boat regatta and a ride across Britain.
A team of 21 triathletes from Deloitte’s Newcastle office recently competed in the London Triathlon, taking part in the sprint (750m swim; 20km bike ride; 5km run), super sprint (400m swim; 20km bike; 2.5 km run) and relay disciplines, raising over £4,000 for its local office charity, the Great North Air Ambulance Service.
June saw Deloitte host its annual Dragon Boat Regatta on the River Wear, which welcomed teams of rowers from North East councils and businesses all competing to raise over £10,000 for The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
The inaugural Deloitte ‘Ride Across Britain’ challenged 100 staff including Newcastle employees, Jim Lee and Rachel Davies, to cycle through strong winds and rain as they departed John O’Groats on a 1000-mile ride to Land’s End, helping to raise over £315,000 nationally for ParalympicsGB.
Deloitte’s next major fundraising event will take place in October when Newcastle employee Andrew Croft, an assistant director in Reorganisation Services, will join around 100 Deloitte employees nationwide to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world, all in the name of charity.
The climbers will work as a team with colleagues from across the firm to reach the summit with the aim of raising £250,000 for Deloitte’s national charity partners: Cancer Research UK, Help for Heroes and Children with Leukaemia, and for Deloitte’s partnership with the African Rainforest Trust.
Meanwhile, the Newcastle office is also gearing up to swap their suits for overalls when they volunteer their time and efforts for the firm’s annual Community Day in November, whereby teams of employees will be assigned to projects that will benefit local communities in the region.
Tracy Faichen, Community Investment champion for the Newcastle office at Deloitte, who took part in both the London Triathlon and Deloitte Dragon Boat Regatta, said: “Our Newcastle staff have organised and taken part in a wide variety of fundraising initiatives from our national corporate challenges including the Deloitte Ride Across Britain and forthcoming Mount Kilimanjaro climb to our local fundraising efforts for the Great North Air Ambulance Service and Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.”
Paul Williamson, Newcastle office senior partner at Deloitte, added: “Deloitte people are renowned for setting high standards in everything we do. Raising over £1million is a landmark achievement. It shows that we apply the same philosophy to our impact in society.
“We’ve achieved this huge sum through ambition, dedication and a relentless focus on the causes we care about. It’s more than just the money – it’s the personal time, the team support, the stretching personal challenges – that add up to a really special achievement.”
In addition to fundraising, during the past year Deloitte has provided more than £5 million of pro-bono and discounted professional services to charity and contributed more than 44,000 hours through community volunteering initiatives.
